Melbourne’s best public golf course.

Play a true Sandbelt golf course for a fraction of the price.

Sandy’s new course has been designed by Mike Cocking from OCM and built by the links staff of Royal Melbourne. The links features generous fairways, firm, fast greens, Sandbelt bunkering and is fun to play whether you are a beginner, a high handicapper or a serious golfer. Great course. Great fun. But don’t just take our word for it!

1st
Hole 1
Away

A gentle opening tee shot with lots of room if you avoid the two fairway bunkers leaving a short iron to a tricky green. The best approach is from the right hand side of the fairway. This as a hole to get your round started on the right footing.

2nd
Hole 2
Sandpit

A mid length par 3 from the middle or back tees. The tee shot is one that demands precision and plays slightly uphill to a raised green. As with all holes on the Sand belt, over the back should be avoided at all costs – this one is no exception.

3rd
Hole 3
Southpaw

This hole provides you an opportunity to open the shoulders a little. There is plenty of room left of the sandy waste that runs down the right hand side. The approach is again slightly uphill to a raised green that sloped back to front and left to right.

4th
Hole 4
Down Right Fun

A tricky par 4 dogleg left to right. A tee shot down the right hand side will be blocked out from seeing the green but a good tee shot on the fairway will give you a look at the green with a short iron. Beware as your ball will run on once it hits the green.

5th
Hole 5
Vern’s Elbow

An uphill right to left dogleg par 4 that has been the ruin of many scorecards. A relatively conservative tee shot to the corner of the dogleg will leave a mid iron approach to a gentle green. Two well played shots will have you smiling when walking off this green.

6th
Hole 6
Temptation

Don’t be fooled by the short length of this hole. The best tee shot will challenge the right hand side of the fairway to give the optimal line into the green. The green is one of the most exposed on the course and plays firm and fast. A precise wedge is required to have a chance at birdie.

7th
Hole 7
Mike’s Gift

The only hole on the course without a bunker around the green. It looks easy enough from the tee but the mounding on the front of the green, which slopes from front to back and left to right, diverts any but the most precise tee shots. Par is a good score here.

8th
Hole 8
The Climb

The longest par 4 on the course plays uphill all the way from the tee to the green. The landing area for the tee shot widens out after you get through the shoot off the tee. A mid to long iron approach landing near the front of the green will give you the best chance of making par. Don’t get greedy shooting at a left pin.

9th
Hole 9
Shorty

For those that knew the old course this hole is in the same place as the old tenth however visually it is a completely different hole. A short length par three that usually plays into the prevailing wind. A good tee shot here should give a decent chance at a birdie.

10th
Hole 10
Double Trouble

A straight away par 4. It is important to hit the fairway off this tee as there’s not much room once you stray. A short iron second requires precision to get the ball close to the flag. Beware a front right pin – getting close is harder than it first might appear.

11th
Hole 11
Get Up

The longest par 3 on the course and usually plays directly into a headwind. The smart golfer ignores the illusion bunker off the tee and lands it short of the green. Balls will feed onto and to the right from the front of the green.

12th
Hole 12
High Tee

A spectacular looking downhill par 3 which is already being heralded as one of the best on the sand belt. Landing your tee shot on this green is risky as it brings over the back into play. A tee shot to the front edge and a couple putts will have you gaining on the field.

13th
Hole 13
Fox Trap

Another opportunity to open the shoulders off the tee. Be sure to take note of where the flag is on the green before hitting the tee shot. The approach here is made a lot easier if your on the correct side of the fairway.

14th
Hole 14
Back Yard

This mid length par 3 has a redan style green which slopes heavily from left to right. A good tee shot into the middle of the green will leave a tricky but makable birdie putt. Beware of hitting it over the back here, getting up and down is a tall order.

15th
Hole 15
Laughing Duck

Another fantastic short par 4 where positioning off the tee far outweighs length. Challenge the lake on the right for the best line into the green. The green itself has a devilish false front and a lot of undulation.

16th
Hole 16
The Rise

A short, but not easy, uphill par 3. Depending on where the flag is located you will not see the bottom of the pin. This my look like an easy birdie opportunity but playing aggressively and not pulling the shot off will lead to a bogey or worse.

17th
Hole 17
Cypress Hill

A dogleg right to left par 4 with an uphill approach to an upturned saucer style green. The landing area off the tee slopes subtly to the left. Only the longest players try challenge the corner and any miss hits usually result in chipping out of the trees.

18th
Hole 18
Avago

While for some it is a drivable par 4, most birdies are made from having a wedge in from the middle of the fairway. The green slopes heavily from right to left so missing it in the green side bunkers will leave a very challenging up and down. This hole is aptly named “Avago” and it presents a good birdie opportunity.
